GTA VI arrives too late for awards season: it's out of the 2026 Golden Joysticks

The Golden Joystick Awards take place on November 11, eight days before launch, so Rockstar's game can't compete until 2027 and can't repeat the five-major-GOTY sweep in a single season.

GTA VI is going to sweep almost everything, but there’s one thing it can’t do no matter how much it sells: win all the major game of the year awards in a single season. The calendar won’t allow it.

The Golden Joystick Awards 2026 take place on November 11 - with public voting closed since October 23 - and GTA VI doesn’t launch until November 19, eight days after the ceremony. Rockstar’s game therefore can’t compete in this year’s awards and will have to wait for the 2027 edition.

The detail matters because of the precedent. As Areajugones points out, the so-called “big five” game of the year awards - Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, DICE Awards, GDC Awards and BAFTA Games Awards - were all won in a single season by Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. By missing the 2026 Golden Joysticks, GTA VI can’t repeat that sweep within one awards season.

The door isn’t fully closed everywhere: each ceremony has its own eligibility rules and cutoff dates, and it wouldn’t be the first time a late-November release sneaks into some list. For now, that’s only a possibility, not a fact; what’s confirmed are the dates, and the dates say GTA VI will compete as a 2027 game.

It’s one more quirk of the phenomenon: the biggest launch in the medium’s history arrives so late in the year that the 2026 awards season will play out without it. The games that do get nominated this year should take their photos with the trophies now: in 2027 they’re up against Rockstar.
