Rockstar explains why GTA VI avoids direct political references
Rupert Humphries tells LOVE Magazine the game does not want to mirror the exact world, and that its satire will be bigger than real life.
Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, has explained in issue 27 of LOVE Magazine why GTA VI will not carry direct political references. Video Games Chronicle reported it on October 5, 2026.
What Rockstar said
Humphries notes that earlier GTA games never focused much on national politics. By his account, Homeland Security and the Patriot Act were central to GTA IV because post-9/11 New York was a real frontline for those issues. For GTA VI, he says they want games that feel “very specific to the moment they are released” but “not reflective of the exact world we live in”, so they avoid being too specific about any person, event or movement.
That does not mean a game without politics. According to VGC, players will see election signs, get robocalls from campaigns, and hear political ads and talk shows on the radio. Humphries talks about filling the world with characters and “culture wars”, and telling stories outside face-to-face conversations too.
Satire and development time
The writer stresses it is not about “holding up a mirror” but about making everything more satirical, larger than life and more grotesque. He adds that they pick an issue and “explode” the part they find interesting until its ridiculousness is clear.
He also mentions the calendar: 13 years since the last instalment, and years of work per game, so the content has to feel vital at release. If a trend blows up for six months, he says, you have to see it for what it is and not jump on the bandwagon. They prefer their own slanted, overblown versions of conspiracy theories or other universal phenomena over like-for-like copies of something real.
