A former Rockstar developer explains why GTA VI on Switch 2 is so tricky

Jérémy Hartvick, a former Rockstar developer, analyzes GTA VI's chances on Nintendo Switch 2: the hardware would force a costly adaptation delivering an inferior experience, though he doesn't rule out streaming.

GTA VI launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the question many players keep asking is whether it will ever come to Nintendo Switch 2. Jérémy Hartvick, a former Rockstar Games developer, tackled the issue in an interview with YouTuber Kiwi Talkz, reported by Areajugones, and his analysis offers little optimism.

The problem, according to Hartvick, is hardware: bringing GTA VI to Switch 2 would require a costly native adaptation that would end up “probably offering an inferior quality experience”. In his view, that effort would make no sense for Rockstar. On alternatives, he mentions streaming as an option that wouldn’t be “entirely absurd”, and on mobile he notes that “the technology exists and has been proven”, though he remains skeptical there too.

Hartvick also doubts that Switch audiences are the target public for a game like GTA VI, and believes the most likely outcome is that anyone who wants to play it will simply buy a console capable of running it. The market seems to back him up: PS5 Pro units are selling out and their resale price has soared precisely because it will be the best way to play GTA VI from day one.

The series’ track record doesn’t help Nintendo fans either: GTA V never came to the original Switch (a recent modding project aside), and while the console did get Red Dead Redemption 13 years after launch, it seems unlikely Rockstar would spend resources on such a port with GTA VI as its absolute priority.

Meanwhile, the path with the best odds remains PC: Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly said PC is an important market for the company, though with no date announced yet.
