Rockstar tightens its modding rules ahead of GTA VI on PC

Rockstar has updated its modding and user-generated content guidelines: mods that alter the story, cheats, NFTs and custom virtual currencies are banned. The rules will also apply to GTA VI when it reaches PC.

Rockstar Games has tightened its modding rules, and the move points straight at the future GTA VI on PC. As reported by LEVEL UP, the company updated its user-generated content guidelines in mid-September, now classifying mods as UGC subject to strict rules across its entire PC catalog: GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and, when it arrives, GTA VI.

The new rules fall into three main blocks:

  • Narrative integrity: mods that alter the official story, missions or character arcs are banned. Importing maps, characters or assets from other games into a Rockstar title is also forbidden, and multiplayer modifications are limited to the official Rockstar Creator platform.
  • Intellectual property: cheat menus, tools that interfere with multiplayer, and the use of Rockstar trademarks to promote custom servers or mods are all out. Incorporating third-party copyrighted material (art, music, logos) or reusing official voice-acting performances is not allowed either.
  • Monetization and content: loot boxes, gacha mechanics, NFTs and custom virtual currencies are banned. Monetization is only possible through digital channels approved by Rockstar.

The relationship between Rockstar, Take-Two and the modding community has always been tense: over the years, several high-profile projects have been shut down after legal intervention. These guidelines do not ban mods outright, but they draw a much narrower perimeter than the GTA V PC community has enjoyed for over a decade.

Context matters: although GTA VI launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the PC version still has no official date, and rumors suggest it could arrive sooner than in previous entries. With these rules already published, Rockstar is making clear that when that moment comes, the modding ecosystem will be born with a muzzle on.
