GTA VI's collector's box sells out and fans respond by 3D printing Macca the Gator

According to GamesRadar, the $399.99 Vice City Collection has sold out despite not including the game, and the community has reacted by recreating its gator mascot figure as a downloadable 3D-printable model.

Against all odds, the box has flown off the shelves. According to GamesRadar, the $399.99 Vice City Collection with no game inside has now sold out completely, after weeks of alternating between available stock and speculative resales that never quite took off.

The sellout has had an unexpected side effect: the community has zeroed in on the box’s centerpiece, the Macca the Gator figure, the alligator mascot of a TV show inside the game’s universe. It’s a garishly pink gator in a blue shirt, holding a blunt in one hand and a martini glass in the other. GamesRadar describes it, with some bite, as a probably deliberate eyesore: exactly the kind of tacky mascot Rockstar would design as a satire of tacky mascots.

Instead of paying the box’s $399.99 or the scalpers’ markup, some fans have taken the homemade shortcut: a community-made 3D model of the figure is already making the rounds, ready for anyone with a 3D printer to download and build at home. The model, popularized by X user Top5Gamingx, does require owning a printer, buying the filament and, for full fidelity, painting the piece by hand.

The episode caps a banner week for the year’s most controversial collection: initial backlash, debate over recycled items, jabs from inside the industry itself and, in the end, a sellout. Rockstar has not commented on a possible restock ahead of November 19.
