Trailer 1's store robbery

The scene that closes GTA VI’s first trailer (1:02) is a robbery: Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, armed and wearing balaclavas, hold up a convenience store. Over the footage, the couple’s conversation lands on the word that defines their relationship: trust.

It was the first look at the pair in action that Rockstar showed, and the one that set the tone of the story: two people against the world, in the tradition of classic outlaw couples.

The store itself has no official name. On our interpretive map of Leonida we place it approximately, based on the trailer’s visual clues.

The couple, according to Rockstar

The official profiles explain why the scene matters. Lucia is fresh out of prison and ready to change the odds in her favor; Jason grew up around grifters and crooks, and Rockstar says he wants an easy life but things keep getting harder. Meeting each other could be the best or worst thing to happen to both.

From trailer to story

The robbery foreshadows what Rockstar says about its story: a heist that goes wrong and a conspiracy that crosses all of Leonida. Rupert Humphries spoke of “pushing a crime spree to its limit without worrying about the consequences”. Heists are also a game system: see heists.

What we don’t know

There is no official confirmation that this store is a specific mission, or of its name or location. We don’t know whether the scene is part of the prologue or a later sequence.
