Over 170 animal species in GTA VI, with Red Dead Redemption 2-style legendary creatures
Game Informer reveals Leonida's wildlife: more than 60 birds, 30 land mammals, reptiles and fish, with manatees, flamingos, whales and jellyfish, plus special categories Rockstar is keeping secret.
The alligators were just the appetizer. The Game Informer cover story puts Leonida’s wildlife at over 170 species: more than 60 types of birds, over 30 land mammals, and a collection of reptiles and sea creatures including feral cats, monkeys, whales, turtles and jellyfish. Rockstar also confirms manatees, flamingos and pelicans.
Michael Kane, the studio’s vice president of dynamic art, explains the approach: “Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include across the different biomes in Leonida - urban and rural environs, aquatic life both inland and ocean, and the wetland habitats like the swamps and Everglades”.
As in Red Dead Redemption 2, the wildlife won’t just be set dressing: some animals fall into special categories - Rare, Discoverable and Legendary - meant to be actively hunted down. Rockstar is keeping those creatures under wraps for now. Technically, animals will show iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, and feather and fur systems.
Players will be able to study the different species and even visit the zoo, one of the game’s confirmed activities. With 170 species ahead, Leonida is shaping up to be the densest ecosystem the studio has ever built.
